Abstract

The LivingstonFamily Papers spans the eighteenth through the twenty-first centuries, andrepresents six generations of descendants of John Livingston (1750-1822) of OakHill and their relatives by marriage in the Curran, Mulford, Hopkins, andRogers families. The correspondence, legal and land records, photographs,diaries, scrapbooks, graphics, ephemera, and printed material chronicle thefamilies' business and social lives, travels, interests, and investments. Alsodocumented are their participation in local government, their service in theAmerican Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II,and their decades of student and alumni involvement with Yale University. Amongthe papers are deeds, ledgers, indentures, and other business records, whichprovide detailed accounts of the Livingstons' financial transactions and landholdings, with particular regard to their Oak Hill Iron Mining and ParamountOil companies, and to their ancestral estate, Oak Hill, all situated along theHudson River in New York State's Columbia County.
